Neeka Lloyd Cook

Neeka Lloyd Cook

Tlingit artist Lloyd Cook has always been drawn to his Native heritage, but did not begin experimenting with formline art until his mid-twenties . Cook’s Tlingit name—Neeka—means “wise man of the village,” and he is from the Eagle/Brown Bear Clan, or Chookaneidi, which hails from the Ice House in Hoonah, AK. Cook was born in Ketchikan, AK, but raised in Washington. He is influenced by his uncle, artist and dance-group leader Fred Fulmer; adopted Chookaneidi master carver Scott Jensen; and the seminal books on formline written by artist and scholar Bill Holm. Cook works primarily in ink and watercolor, but has recently begun learning to carve in wood and paint murals. “If not for this beautiful inheritance, I would still be a misguided warrior. The more work I do the more I understand that this art is a life long journey.” - Neeka Cook
